It pays to talk to your doctor … and ask questions

Recently my wife visited a doctor and was prescribed two eye drops. “I hope you have insurance, these are very expensive.” the doctor said.

“Is there a generic? I have to pay a lot more if we use the brand when there is a generic.” I asked

“I don’t want your wife to use the generic, they are not as good.” the doctor replied. She also explained how to use the drops and that one came in small packets that despite instructions could each be used for two applications.

Wow, I thought, an interesting point of view and one that is going to cost me a lot of money. We left with two prescriptions marked DAW (dispense as written).

When I went to the pharmacy to fill the scripts I was told neither of the drugs had a generic. Both came in a small bottle (no little packets). But the doctor was right about one thing, they were expensive, my 20% co-payment was $57.00.
