The airwaves are full of commercials from organizations that promise to help you deal with the IRS. Specifically, if you owe back taxes and accompanying penalties and interest, these organizations will negotiate on your behalf. Testimonies proudly claim “I owed $85,000 and XYZ helped me settle for $1.89”. Whoopee, this guy (and thousands of others) beat the system and you were screwed.
What’s all this settling about anyway? If you owe taxes, you owe them and if you don’t pay somebody else does or the federal deficit gets higher.
Americans owe $300 billion in back taxes. Collecting that would go a long way in fixing the federal budget gap.
Pay up you deadbeats … talk about paying your fair share. By the way, those not paying are not the 1%.
