Obama opposes raising the debt limit … when it’s convenient to do so

2013

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure,” he said. “It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

… Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.” Senator Barack Obama, March 2006

Total federal debt

03/01/2006
$8,269,768,312,946.41

10/01/2013
$16,747,478,675,335.18

What more is there to say? But make no mistake, nothing here is unique to Obama or the Democrats for that matter. As long as voters demand and are more than willing to accept lots of “free” stuff, politicians will deliver the goods as payment for votes. We have nothing to complain about.
