Inequality sounds negative so now the President will try something new.
The overarching theme of Mr. Obama’s speech will be what he has described as the need to tackle “economic inequality”—
The president, however, is expected to rebrand the controversial phrase by talking about providing “opportunity for all” and “rewarding hard work.” WSJ 1/28/14
Who can oppose opportunity or rewarding hard work? It’s too bad that’s not what he is really talking about.
What he should be talking about is HOW he would like to create opportunity for all.
And exactly what is in place now that inhibits opportunity? He should also be honest and tell people that the primary factors limiting advancement for low or medium skilled and less educated people are beyond our borders and have nothing to do with the spread between income in America. As is the usual case, we focus on the symptoms of a problem, not the causes.
Tell Americans they need skills and education. They need to not live a life that inhibits their opportunities (like dropping out of school, getting pregnant multiple times with no spouse, creating unnecessary debt, displaying a poor work ethic and attitude, wasting money on tattoos and piercing , etc). A bit simplistic; yes, but the essence of the problem nevertheless.
