I like this better than “Senior Citizen”

2014

We like to label people, especially senior,” seasoned” citizens. In addition to a named label we are also assumed to be slow minded, feeble, dumb, technologically challenged and of course poor. Never mind all that could easily be applied to anyone of any generation; no matter; we are the ones who get all the discounts. 😎

Case in point

20140124-145945.jpg What’s up with this? Seniors are too stupid or inept to read the real book? Next thing you know there will be one of those For Dummies books to help seniors read and comprehend. Get this, we learned to read a heck of a lot better than succeeding generations. And guess what, takes us off those damn bicycles, I never owned one in my life and I’m not buying one for someone’s photo op. Besides, I spent my monthly allowance on a new router, a new modem, a few new apps, my new iPhone and I’m saving up for a new iPad … so there! 😜

I am happy to report we now have a new label (at least new to me), one I can live with. Did you know that if you were born in 1945 or earlier you are a “traditionalist.” That sounds a lot better than baby boomer or any of the others. Of course, there is the other obvious advantage of being a traditionalist; we are right and all the others are wrong.👅

Traditional has a very simple meeting:

1. consisting of or derived from tradition; “traditional history”; “traditional morality”
2. pertaining to time-honored orthodox doctrines; “the simple security of traditional assumptions has vanished”

At the risk of a tad over generalizing, we traditionalists know how to save, to budget, to think beyond the next two days, to spend without credit cards, to stay married to the first person we married, to be satisfied with what we earn and can afford and … here I go out on a limb … how to raise children and enjoy family. You know, the traditional way. 😊

So if you want to label us old geezers, traditionalist will do just fine thank you! We are not X or Y, we are just Right!

  1. I think you’re looking for something to complain about this time. 🙂 There is also a “My iPad for Kids.” I suspect the titles are simply marketing. The content is >90% the same.

I agree that labeling the generations is silly, and the label “Baby Boom” is especially silly. Long before anybody had labeled them “boomers,” Tom Wolfe labeled them “Generation Me.” (Gee, I think he was accurate.) Which led to a period of time when “Generation X” was labeled “Generation We.” Ughh. This all must’ve come from Madison Ave.
