1917 The United States declared war on Germany. In the ensuing weeks New Jersey National Guardsmen were mobilized at Sea Girt and sent to Camp McClellan, Alabama, where they became part of the Twenty-ninth Division before shipping out to France.

1968 My New Jersey National Guard unit was mobilized at Orange, received advance training at Sea Girt and later sent to Camp (Fort) McClellan, Alabama where most were shipped out to Viet Nam (I think we were in the same barracks).
Fort McClellan is now closed.

Congrats, Mr. Quinn, for serving and surviving an unwise and unwinnable war. I don’t even remember the supposed rationale for that invasion and ultimate defeat. I was in college and was the sole surviving son of a deceased veteran so I was not called to serve. That war was unwinnable for many of the same reasons that the war in Afghanistan is unwinnable: our troops cannot figure out who the enemy is. Why don’t our leaders learn from simple logical experiences?
