From USA Today: The minimum wage increase is part of an economic agenda that Senate Democrats are promoting this year that they say will help boost the middle class.
Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour means the minimum annual earnings for a full-time minimum wage worker will be $21,008, (most are not full-time) nowhere near the middle class.
If you want to see some of the absurdity of the argument, read this from the Department of Labor. $10.10 an hour for your waitress?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
Workers at or below the federal minimum are:
💲Disproportionately young: 50.6% are ages 16 to 24; 24% are teenagers (ages 16 to 19).
💲Mostly (78%) white; fully half are white women.
💲Largely part-time workers (64% of the total).
The wisdom of raising the minimum wage notwithstanding, based on the facts it’s hard to see how an increase will do much for the middle class despite the political rhetoric.
