New survey shows why history matters

I find this hard to believe, but then again why should I? Many people dismiss history as boring or simply are too focused on immediate wants to pay much attention.

At the same time I’m old enough to have gone to school when they actually taught history both American and world.

Perhaps this type of ignorance is why many people dismiss the actions of Putin. If people don’t know about the holocaust, I don’t suspect they know what the Russians did to tens of millions of their own people in the 20th century.

Oh well, I vowed never to be shocked again when someone on the Jay Walking bit said the Eiffel Tower was in NYC.

In a separate conclusion, the survey found that 35% of respondents had never heard of the Holocaust. And fully 66% had either not heard of it or didn’t believe the historical accounts were accurate.

Younger people were significantly less aware of the Holocaust than older people. While 61% of those over 50 years old knew about the tragedy, only 48% of people under 35 were aware of it. That trend is expected to continue with the fading of the generation that lived through the Holocaust, which ended nearly 70 years ago.

imageIn this case, I have walked in the gas chamber at Auschwitz, and other camps, I have seen the tons of hair shaved from victims heads and cried at the mounds of children’s shoes left behind. There is no excuse to be unaware of history and such ignorance is dangerous.

    Here’s interesting historic symbolism.

    Yalta, Crimea

Stalin, FDR and Churchill met at Livadia Palace in Crimea,
a palace that once belonged to Tsar Nicholas II.

So… the big three… Stalin, FDR and Churchill met Feb 1945
to plan their democrat/bolshevik future for Europe after Hitler’s
demise. They met in a palace that belonged to Tsar Nicholas II
who was deposed by democrats and murdered by bolsheviks.

    1. I was in that palace last October and saw the table where they sat and also saw Churchills bedroom. Nice, but not very luxurious and not much of a palace though as palaces go.

I believe the old saying that those who win the war write the history.

The ancient Aryan Persian empire is an example. Much of the history
of this Indo-European empire was written by its conquerers, the Greeks.

Putin is an interesting example. Which historical Russia does he embrace…
Tsarist or Soviet Russia. It appears he personifies a combination of the two –
a sort of historical double-mindedness. But appearances can be deceiving.
Which reminds me of yet another old saying… those who do not learn from
history are doomed to repeat it.

  3. I am shocked and dismayed by peoples lack of knowledge of history. This can only have bad results. I have found that people don’t know the truth and when you tell them the facts they don’t believe it.
