Why hasn’t your IRA and 401k fully recovered and much more?

Even today I read an article blaming the poor performing stock market for people not saving for retirement. What⁉️

It’s not the stock market that is a poor performer, it is the people ostensibly saving and investing. Why haven’t you participated in capital accumulation just as the wealthy have?

Now who are you going to blame?

  1. I kept our IRA’s all invested with the same allocations during and after the 2008 recession. I retired in 2009 and we have considerably more (much more than the rate of inflation) in our IRA’s today compared to the day that I retired. And this is after we have taken out funds each year for living expenses. The people that lost so much money must have taken funds out of the market when markets were near their low point and “stuffed it in their mattress” or in a bank savings account (which with today’s interest rates is more or less the same thing)/

    1. You are exactly right. The typical person is prone to buy high and sell low when the market dips. Taking the longer term view seems nearly impossible for people.
