Bowe Bergdahl … not a new story, but still disturbing

In the context of the current debate over the prisoner exchange for Bowe Bergdahl, it would be easy to conclude that the following portion of the story is a right-wing, Republican effort to embarrass the Administration. Why would we take the risk of trading five terrorists and known murderers for this soldier? Why indeed?

In the early-morning hours of June 30th, according to soldiers in the unit, Bowe approached his team leader not long after he got off guard duty and asked his superior a simple question: If I were to leave the base, would it cause problems if I took my sensitive equipment?

Yes, his team leader responded – if you took your rifle and night-vision goggles, that would cause problems.

Bowe returned to his barracks, a roughly built bunker of plywood and sandbags. He gathered up water, a knife, his digital camera and his diary. Then he slipped off the outpost.

The problem is that the above was written in a June 2012 article in Rolling Stones, long before any political controversy.

Was it a prudent deal? Is it fair to other soldiers? Are more Americans being put at risk?

  1. Glad Bowe Bergdahl is now “safe” and in American hands. That said, he may have made an immature mistake possibly brought on by depression from the stress of the war but the bottom line is he deserted is company and he basically brought this on himself. He is lucky he did not suffer the fate of others who were slaughtered. He is and should always be recorded as a deserter. God only knows if he committed treasonous acts and that should not be cause to excuse his actions. Investigate his actions, pay him while that occurs but in the end if it is found that he did in fact leave his company then he should be court marshaled.

You can be sure the five detainees that were released as a part of this “end of war prisoner exchange” will not be attending church and praying for world peace. We can only hope they “find” their spiritual leader to be a peaceful leader of mankind.
