President Barack Obama said Thursday that up to 300 military advisers would be heading to Iraq in the wake of escalating chaos in that nation – but stressed that the solutions to rising violence in Iraq were political, not military.
“There’s no military solution inside of Iraq” he told reporters in the White House briefing room, following a meeting with his national security team – at least “not one that’s led by the United States.”
The president announced several steps to respond to the rising violence, including fresh intelligence efforts, potential “targeted and precise” military action, and increased support for Iraqi security forces that included the additional military advisers – but not ground troops.
U.S. troops “are not going to be fighting in Iraq again,” he said. “…Ultimately, this is something that is going to have to be solved by the Iraqis.”
