The simple job of President

From an e-mail from Barack Obama

Friend —

If you boil it down, my job is simple to understand — you elected me to make it a little easier for hard-working Americans to succeed.

But I can’t do this on my own, and that’s why Democrats across the country and I need your help.

Chip in $3 or more before this critical deadline to elect a Congress that will work with me.

Really, Mr President? That’s your simple job? Yikes, that certainly explains a lot. Hard working Americans will always succeed unless they make dumb life choices or are blocked by government regulation and poorly thought out policies (pushing home ownership comes to mind).

And exactly what do you mean by making it easier? Does expanding the number of Americans dependent on government programs meet that definition? Is that progress?

Mr President, I didn’t vote for you so I have no expectations, but even I know the job of President is not simple or simply defined and I know it involves a great deal more than making things easier. It involves our role in the world and as part of that our economic and physical security. It involves strategic planning for multiple generations and generations yet to come. It involves upholding our Constitution even when things don’t go according to the President’s agenda.

Mr President, if you think your job is simple and as one dimensional as you imply, you are in the wrong job. But then I already knew that. Even worse, your rhetoric and constant populist message does a great disservice to hard working Americans and to those not so hard working as well.

  1. very well put. the problem, however, is that (and you say as much in your last sentence) he is in fact a “populist president”. What’s important is being cool, redistributing wealth, raising the minimum wage, single/ highhandedly granting amnesty, free/subsidized health care for the so called alienated and underprivileged and creating a domestic agenda that continues to keep his base UN-informed and dependent on him and his party.

We certainly have reached a new low in defining “populism”. Strategic thinking …..what in the world is that?….foreign policy….?.(sounds risky ….and hey I’m not getting any votes from Ukraine). No populism is inevitably a race to the lowest common denominator in American politics.

I find the constant( and now even) open political campaigning particularly disgusting. . Is he doing “presidential stuff” when he is out there” beating his chest” for democratic campaign contributions. This flagrant,,outrageous and in my opinion un-presidential behavior) should be out -lawed…..but hey……. that’s never going to happen. When does the governing start and the campaigning end? In Australia ( a democracy) you must vote however, I do not believe you are allowed to campaign 365 a year……

  2. This guy has to be the worst President in modern day history. Even Jimmy Carter surpasses this one. Sure Obama uses the word simple. He has no leadership ability. He blames everyone, particularly the Republicans, for is lack of leadership and inability to get things done. The office is simple to him when all he does is flight around in his Air Force One White House and attend meaningless rallies or fund raisers while the world literally is falling apart under his so called “leadership”. If he doesn’t get his way he just uses the “Executive Priviledge” to sneak in a law. Wow the Presidency is surely “simple” He will probably even blame the Republicans for his gray hair.

    1. yes….keeping it simple is what you have to do …..in attempting to cater to the needs of his base. I emphasize his” populist presidency” from this perspective. He is a creation of the populist (extreme left media). . In fact, you might consider him a/the” reality tv” superstar with his own fan base not unlike an Oprah or perhaps anyone of the talentless ….pointless….”.house wives of”…..shows.
