In response to my last post regarding voter ID and uniformed voters which you can find here one commenter said:
Not my “point of view” – just facts – Republicans in state governments in more than 25 states are doing everything they can to make it more difficult for certain people to vote and those certain people are those that will likely vote Democratic – it has become a travesty!
Let’s ignore the fact the greatest abuse of voting laws came from the once solid Democratic South.
I have no doubt shenanigans abound in both parties to impact voters and voting. Gerrymandering districts is a prime example. However, to automatically equate requiring an ID to vote with preventing certain people from voting is quite a stretch, a stretch freely promoted by the left.
The fact is many states, including liberal democratic states such as California require voter ID. You can see the requirement by state here.
Exactly who are these “certain people” who are inhibited by an ID requirement and who will likely vote Democrat and why? I surmise the implication is they are people who believe the Democratic Party will provide more of one thing or another for their benefit. Can we conclude that those certain people are minorities, poor, uneducated or undereducated, perhaps on some form of public assistance? That seems to be the implication.
How do we then make the leap that these certain people cannot obtain some form of ID to vote? Now, if there is a conscious effort to block attainment of an ID that is not acceptable. However, there are many forms of ID and many ways to establish special voter ID systems if necessary. Are these certain people so [insert your appropriate word] that they cannot handle voting requirements?
My opinion is that there should be a basic test before anyone can vote. Let’s face it, there are a lot of uniformed morons out there. That’s never going to happen of course because our form of government assumes the equal right and qualification to vote; perhaps our greatest strength and our greatest weakness.
“Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption.”
James Garfield, “A Century of Congress” published in Atlantic, July 1877.
And I will add, because the people vote for self-interest and entitlement above all else.

The objection to voter id is not the idea of showing a state issue id, it is what some states in the south have included in their voter id laws; an example, North Carolina in their obvious attempt to stop minority voters and students have included, ending same day voter registration, early voting, closing polls in minority areas, discontinuing voter registration for high schools students turning 18; and requiring only drivers license instead of state issued student id cards. This is only in North Carolina, in Texas, woman must have their id match exactly to their current name; many people know that woman change their last names through marriage or divorce what ever the circumstance. A federal woman judge in Texas, could not vote in the primary and had to leave a provisional ballot; and she had voted for years as a republican. ln Florida, Governor Rick Scott tried all of the tricks that made Florida a laughing stock which wasn’t even able to present their results towards the election of 2012, because of not getting the ballots counted due to long lines of people still voting after election had ended. Florida federal judge concluded that the GOP legislature in Florida had divided districts unconstitutionally to favor Republicans and were ordered to redraw district lines before 2014 election. These voter id laws in Republican held states and districts have gone beyond voter id, they have included restrictions on the days and locations where people can vote. How are these added restrictions compliant with presenting an id to vote? Many voters are more informed than politicians and their supporters want them to be.

Learn from arcruz24481, Mr. Quinn – he certainly understands what is happening regarding voter suppression and apparently you do not – the minority elderly white male establishment knows that they will never again win an open and fair election so they are attempting to suppress the votes of any citizens who may be inclined to vote against their oligarchy – they are going as far as eliminating portable restroom facilities where long voter lines and waiting times may occur – all of the published facts testify that the actual incidences of voter fraud are minute, miniscule and infinitesimal – the widespread Republican voter suppression crimes under the totally false pretenses of “preventing voter fraud” is a complete and consummate falsehood and, in your heart, you know that – nationally we have MSNBC on the Left, CNN in the middle (maybe) and ludicrous Fauz Nuz deluding people with constant far right-wing propaganda and falsehoods – your blog has descended into the same nauseous level as Faux Nuz – clean up your act and try to remain relevant

See my reply to him. No one is defending these tactics, but don’t use the generic term opposing voter ID and don’t pretend these types of actions and worse were not done by Democrats in the same states in the past which is how we got the Voters Rights Act of 1965 to begin with, legislation introduced by a Democrat and a Republican. .

You have valid points and this nonsense should not continue. However, the rallying cry of voter ID is as you say, not what this all about. There is nothing wrong in using an ID applied fairly for all. And, what may be true today in certain Republican states was also true of Democratic state in the 60s and before and much worse as a matter of fact. Of course as I mentioned previously manipulating voting districts is not new and certainly not unique to Republicans.

Voter ID is not the problem. When states with low voter turn-out that had a Republican Governor or led government wanted to make-up new rules/requirements very close to an election, (which is the same as Gerrymandering districts that happens in all states from both parties) than there is a problem.Start the process to ID & register voters right after an election, so all who want to has time to understand & fulfill the new requirements.
