WASHINGTON — Democrats are stepping up their appeals to older voters in the final stretch before the midterm elections, spurred by polls showing the party has regained some support lost in the Obama years. The question is whether they can narrow the gap with Republicans enough to offset their broader disadvantages given widespread dissatisfaction with President Obama.
Both parties covet voters 65 and older because that group tends to make up a disproportionately large share of the midterm electorate. Democrats long had an edge, until less-supportive baby boomers aged and began replacing the Depression-era generation in the ranks of older voters. Now Democrats are reliant on young voters, as well as minorities and single women, many of whom vote only in presidential elections.

Translation: nobody will tell you the truth. Nobody will take the corrective actions urged for years by the Social Security and Medicare Trustees, nobody will acknowledge the critical dates for the solvency of both programs, everyone will tell you not to worry. The fact is some combination of changes in future benefits and higher taxes is necessary‼️

You are so right about the honesty and courage. However, look at the comments on this blog related to the COLA and you can see why politicians don’t want to tell the truth. Many, if not most seniors have an incredible entitlement, I paid for it mentality and little knowledge of how the system works. And in addition, little concern how all this affects their children and grandchildren.

You are correct. The fix or fixes to Social Security are not complicated. If the system is to survive through this new century, benefits must be reduced and taxes must be increased. There are a host of proposed fixes which will make the system solvent. The only thing missing, and it’s virtually absent in both parties on this issue, is political honesty and courage.
