2015 Social Security Cost of Living Increase (COLA) is 1.7%

The September CPI-W is 234.170

The calculation is July, August, September average CPI-W for 2013 compared with 2014.

234.241-230.326/230.326 x 100 = 1.7%

This means Social Security benefits will increase by 1.7% for 2015

A typical monthly benefit of $1200 will increase to $1220

  1. T-O writes,”not to be heard from again until next COLA season.” I applaud the reticence. I’m in hopeful expectation it will be maintained.

    1. 284 “thumbs down”!
Sorry Vince, the public, judging from all those thumbs down you got, wants me back so I will have to oblige them. Vox Populi and all that. Right Vinny me boyo?
Now don’t be like the Jets coach “Always Cryin’ Ryan” (are you related? seems to me that you both cry about others a lot). Look at the bright side though if it wasn’t for Douggie you would have the record for most thumbs down for a post on this blog. Way to go Vinny!!! Then again you’re like Avis #2 you’ll have to try harder. TTYL and “see ya round”. No doubt I’ll hear from you shortly…post away…who knows you may beat out Douggie for most “thumbs down on your next post.

      1. I’m not sure how to read the thumbs up or down. I replied to a simple question giving only the facts “Take your monthly benefit and multiply it by 101.7% which in your case makes your new benefit $720 a month.” and got 147 👎. Go figure.

      2. Third Posting of the Same Remarks because I’m going to get this to post right next to Quinn’s remarks. He has a way of maneuvering folks that get his remarks on the top of the page…
Quinn…the “thumbs down” sign has been the sign of disapproval since Roman times. It is clear that many (147 of the 284) people were so disgusted with your condescending response to my original remarks on the COLA increase that anything that you posted here was going to have them disapprove of anything that you wrote just to voice their displeasure with you.
Your not sure how to read “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”…don’t tell that around not even to your pillow. Are you “sure” that the sun rises in the morning and sets at night….why don’t you call Vince and Douggie and ask them before you respond.

      3. Oh that’s it. Everyone read my comments to you and voted down my simple math reply to a simple question as a result. That doesn’t say much for those who voted does it?

      4. Quinn..Yep that’s it! Says even less about you, don’t worry about what it says “about them”. You have this need to be loved don’t you? Anyone who doesn’t agree with you doesn’t have much to say about them…and yes you are to be congratulated on your perceptivity (i.e.: “that’s it”).
I say again Quinn, you’re right with “Thats it” and it does say a lot about “them” contrary to YOUR LONE OPINION, I put it to you that “they” don’t like bullying, “they” don’t like name calling, “they” don’t like a condescending attitude and, though it may seem hard for you to believe, perhaps “they” don’t like you.
But according to Quinny if he doesn’t like what you said…then there is not much to say about you. (“That doesn’t say much for those who voted”)
You really should have called Vince or Douggie before responding…but I’m sure the dynamic duo (as well as a troll or two or even the intrepid BBB, bless his soul) will make an appearance to put in their two cents worth before two suns have risen

  3. Dickster ‘Old Bean’!!! & “BBB” ‘Alte Ruck’!!!

    Bwahahahahahahaha!!! Bwahahahahahaha!!!

A COLA increase of 1.7% Your and “BBB”‘s knickers must both be in a double twist and doing a two and a half gainers to boot.

    Bwahahahahahahahahaha!!!! Bwahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

All your wasted anti-COLA columns and your futile words and name calling, it seems, are just that, wasted and futile, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing and accomplishing less! You and your cronies didn’t stop the COLA this year and guess what? You won’t stop it next year or any other year for that matter into the foreseeable future.
As for the size of the COLA increase, of course it should be more (As my African-American fellow citizens always say about anything that they get , “it should be more” ), BUT, in my case, it will do.

My needs are small, simple, few and humble. Good health, a warm and comfortable place to sleep, a small ration of a tasty food in my belly, a little glass of a favorite beverage to quench my thirst and a good book to read and all of my life’s needs are met. Everything else that may come my way, for I do not seek more out, is superfluous, and are “nice to haves” but not “a must haves”.

’Tis not much, this COLA increase, but ’twill do handsomely for my needs.

Yep, Dick and BBB I know “it’s going to make your day” when I tell you that the COLA increase struck our kliene gemütlich hütte (small cozy cottage) not once but twice. My darling, intelligent, beautiful and classy wife will be collecting COLA on her social security benefits too .

Each month when we use our increase to go out to the diner (after all it WAS a small increase and will only cover two diner dinners a month) I will raise my glass of water and toast you, your thoughts and your column. [ I’m using water to toast your anti-COLA rants because water (1) is all wet just like the anti-COLA postings and opinions, (2) is simple and plain with no thought behind it, (3) comes for nothing because it is worth relatively nothing and (4) you get it whether you ask for it or not…again like the anti-COLA postings ].

Well Dick, and BBB, as well as all of Dick’s gentle readers, enjoy your COLA increase BUT I won’t be there to share your immense joy with you because like the Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy, Paladin and the other cowboys of those days gone by I will now ride off into the sunset…not to be heard from again until next COLA season (Got your hopes up, RD and BBB, didn’t I? You know, when you read “not to be heard from again”?). Until then gentle readers, Dickster, not so gentle readers, ole name callers and their ilk, “Happy Trails To You Until We Meet Again”. See ya all again in September, 2015 in this same place; no doubt with the same people and same old, tired, hackneyed and worn-out anti-COLA ravings and rants.

A Parting Poem To All The Anti COLA Folks:

    Humpty Dickie
Humpty Dickie sat on a wall
Hoping that this year the COLA would fall
A word to all of Dickie’s horsies, and all of Dickie’s men,
His trolls and the like, from me your “ best friend”.
The COLA is up and it won’t come to an end.
You can take your best shots ‘cause I won’t be here to read or to see.
Because Dick’s column is ignored until next year by me.

    PS
[If any of you want me to see any responses you might make or if you are considering posting a riposte to this immensely intelligent, wonderfully upbeat, very articulate, unpretentiously clever, extremely knowledgeable and delightfully erudite pro-COLA posting of mine you will all have to wait and save them until next COLA season, or if you don’t care if I see them or not, post away!!…in the meantime enjoy YOUR COLA increase. LMAO at all you name callers and nay sayers!!!]

    Hi-Ho Siver Awwaaaaaayyy!!!

Finally with apologies to Dame Vera Lynn who is still alive and going to be 98 next March…(Just think, Dick and BBB, how many COLAs she would have gotten is she was a US Citizen. It must really give you both heartburn just to think about that). To Dick, BBB, all his gentle readers, nice commentators as well as his not so gentle readers and not so nice commentators and name callers here’s a tune sung by Ms. Lynn for you all (and me, too, for that matter) that I’m sure will simply melt and yet, at the same time, warm the cockles of your heart as it did mine:

Until next September then (oops I already said that) so then I guess the only things left to say is….“Good Night Mrs. Calabash…wherever you are” &”sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me” OR stop the COLA for that matter.

bwahahahahahahaha!!!!<-He who laughs last laughs best and thats me laughing last and, therefore, best.

    1. I’m assuming this is an attempt at humor; keep trying. It must be nice to live in a world isolated from the realities facing the rest of us. I never ranted against the COLA I merely point out that it is unaffordable and should be modified and that unless things change (probably by raising payroll taxes) the COLA won’t do much good when the basic benefit needs to be lowered to keep Social Security going. Enjoy your dinner our; merrily we roll along.

      1. Thumbs Down galore-Dickie. If they ever have a reality show to pick out a comedian don’t volunteer to be a judge.
Tsk, tsk. All those thumbs down!!! You obviously, according to the ones who read your post, are not the one to detect a smidgeon of humor in anything.
It appears your readers don’t like your snide answers to postings that disagree with you either. (Now quick call Douggie or use the BBB or a “troll” you made up to respond by using slurs or calling names).
BTW Dickster…it appears, given the plethora of “thumbs downs” that you got your assumption is WRONG!!!
AND NEVER “ASSUME” Dick…you know what they say about the word “assume”

      1. 285 “thumbs down” in less than 5 days!!!
A NEW WORLD’S RECORD for Dickie’s Blog!!! You are to be congratulated!!!
        Now about your “post”..
You think??? (which is debatable). Judging from your 285 “thumbs down” you’re a majority of one with your opinion (actually it wasn’t really an opinion was it? It was an insult delivered by an old, crotchety and apparently very frustrated man. Seems to me, judging by huge number of the “thumbs down” to your post that I will have to relinquish my #1 standing to you. After all I got only one vote yours while it appears you have gotten 285.
Quick question for you. Are you a close friend of Dickie’s? Does he have you on speed dial when he needs a crotchety very old man to call people name or insult them?
