The value of education Part II

It is my view that having a college education, attending the best school, graduating high in ones class with excellent grades are a small part of the equation for success.

During my many decades in the corporate world I observed many, many times the success or failure of people. I found no correlation between the quality of their education and their career achievements.

Far more important are an array of personal qualities, and what I would call street smarts, political savvy and the like (not to mention determination and plenty of hard work).

In other words, there is always intrinsic value in education, formal or otherwise, but that education is no guarantee of success, and in fact, plays a minor role in an individual’s success.

Our policy makers and politicians should make that clear.

  1. You have a very valid point and actually I think that is part of the problem in areas where requirining a four year degree cannot be validated for a given job.

  2. Like it or not, education is the price of entry to have a chance at becoming successful in today’s world. It may not predict success once you are through the door but it very much predicates if you get to and through said door.
