Taxing Social Security benefits

I frequently get questions and hear misinformation about the taxation of Social Security benefits. Rather than try and go through it all, I found a good explanation of the issue on the CBO blog.

It an interesting process because in theory the worker paid for half his or her benefit and yet up to 85% of the benefit is taxable to people with relatively modest incomes. So much for the “I earned and paid for this entitlement!” 😜
