Massachusetts hospital faces lawsuit over double-booked surgeries
A whistleblower lawsuit filed against Massachusetts General Hospital alleges orthopedic surgeons kept patients under anesthesia longer than medically necessary so they could perform simultaneous surgeries under an incentive framework that rewarded physicians for performing more procedures.
Dr. Lisa Wollman, who worked as an anesthesiologist at the hospital, says she witnessed at least five doctors routinely performing simultaneous operations between 2010 and 2015, and the suit argues that the surgeons also defrauded Medicare and Medicaid by billing for the surgeries though they were allegedly not present during critical portions.
