What do we want in our President? Although impossible to get a perfect person, shouldn’t we strive to elect the best we can? What qualities should we look for?
In an effort to be as objective as possible I asked artificial intelligence to provide a list. I think AI did pretty well don’t you?
A strong vision for the country’s future. The President is the leader of the free world, and they need to have a clear vision for where they want the country to go. This vision should be inspiring and motivating, and it should be based on a deep understanding of the country’s strengths and weaknesses.
An ability to put their own times in the perspective of history. The President needs to be able to see the big picture and understand how their decisions will affect the country in the long term. They should also be able to learn from the mistakes of past presidents and avoid repeating them.
Effective communication skills. The President is the face of the country, and they need to be able to communicate effectively with the American people. This means being able to explain complex issues in a clear and concise way, and it also means being able to connect with people on an emotional level.
The courage to make unpopular decisions. The President will often have to make decisions that are unpopular with some people. They need to have the courage to stand up for what they believe in, even when it’s not easy.
Crisis management skills. The President is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and they will be responsible for handling any major crises that occur during their term. They need to be able to think quickly and make sound decisions under pressure.
Character and integrity. The President is a role model for the country, and they need to be someone who the American people can look up to. They need to have strong moral values and be someone who can be trusted to do the right thing.
Wise appointments. The President will have the power to appoint judges, cabinet members, and other officials. They need to be able to make wise appointments that will help them achieve their goals for the country.
An ability to work with Congress. The President needs to be able to work effectively with Congress in order to pass legislation and get things done. They need to be able to build relationships with members of Congress and find common ground.
These are just some of the qualities that are most desirable for President of the United States. Ultimately, the best qualities for a president will depend on the specific challenges facing the country at the time

What about Harry Truman? He was a politician within the local corrupt Kansas City Democratic apparatus. But he seems to have been an honest politician in his roles as Vice President and then President. He made difficult and controversial decisions, especially authorizing the use of two atomic bombs on. I don’t think he ever personally profited from his higher offices. And his famous motto: “The buck stops here”
When have you heard that motto by a President since then!

Very good point. Having read his biography and visited his home and library, i have to agree with you. He may have been as close as it comes to decency although i suspect someone could play the racist card to some degree.

Democracy is not for amateurs. So no surprise that we are seeing an increase in support for autocracy on both extremes, particularly on the right. Also disappointing that you felt like you had to take down your post from yesterday. It was a courageous statement

Actually I didn’t take it down. I don’t know what happened and I can’t find the draft either. 😡

Maybe the AI did more than just give you a template for an ideal President ;-). Seriously though, sorry that happened.

The AI describes all the qualities but doesn’t know anyone that has them or that is not controlled by various interests. The people who grasp at the job are unprincipled enough to do anything. The best you can hope for is to avoid an out and out psychopath. Sounds gloomy but that is where we are.

Where do we find a president who has character and integrity? To get the job, first you have to suck up to the party and that compromises your integrity right there.
I been thinking about when the last time we had a president with integrity during my life time. I need to do more research to ensure what I think is true, but my leading candidate right now is Jimmy Carter, maybe followed by Gerald Ford. Reagan had character but I have to look at him a little more closely. However having integrity for President Carter did not translate into being a great president. He would probably be ranked as the worse president in modern times until Biden. Although Biden did say this month that he cured cancer and that should be worth something in his mind.
George H. W. Bush had integrity with other nations. To this day, it is hard for me to believe that he was able to quickly build a coalition, got UN resolutions, and congress support. A president can hardly get any bill passed today unless they have the majority.
There is a quote from the movie The Hunt for Red October that goes like this: “Listen, I’m a politician, which means I’m a cheat and a liar, and when I’m not kissing babies, I’m stealing their lollipops. But it also means I keep my options open.” I believe that quote is true once you start having to fund raise to get elected. You owe somebody something.
It is all about keep the power and getting reelected. But you are right, AI picked the needed qualities well.
