Mr. Trump is planning an assault on immigration on a scale unseen in modern American history. Millions of undocumented immigrants would be barred from the country or uprooted from it years or even decades after settling here.
Bolstered by agents reassigned from other federal law enforcement agencies and state police and the National Guard, officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement would carry out sweeping raids aimed at deporting millions of people each year. Military funds would be used to erect sprawling camps to hold undocumented detainees. A public-health emergency law would be invoked to shut down asylum requests by people arriving at the border. And the government would try to end birthright citizenship for babies born on U.S. soil to undocumented parents.

To many Americans all the above sounds good, even the right thing to do.
I wonder if this is about illegal immigration or plain old xenophobia?

But shouldn’t we be asking who will perform all the jobs that lose workers, how we will replace the lost taxes – including Social Security taxes – now paid by those individuals and what the economic impact will be. Who will replace our declining birth rate?
What I would like to know is what Mr Trump plans to propose to make Social Security solvent and capable of paying full promised benefits.
How he plans to keep the Medicare hospital trust solvent.
What plans he has for the Affordable Care Act and assuring health insurance for the 20+ million Americans depending on it.
I would think you want to know all that as well.

Enforce our immigration laws – what a concept.

A better solution is review them and make sure they are working in our best interest and are fair. We once bared the Chinese, we once had open borders. We need immigrants, lots of them. As long as this is a better country than where desperate people come from, they will come. In any case it shouldn’t be a political football.

Correct. Change the laws to meet out interests. I have respect for anyone trying to improve their situation by coming to this country. However, if you are not legal (“undocumented” – a BS term) the prospect of being deported should be real. Actions have consequences.
We’re a country of immigrants, of course. That said, it’s not the 19th century either. I wish the politics was minimized, but laws are written by politicians.

How so many millions of people believe Trump is good for our country escapes logic. The man says what he is going to do and yet ignorant uninformed people (idiots) flock to his support at rallies around the country. It is not a joke. The man is very dangerous to our nation. All he proposes is to be against something rather than as you state offering policy about Social Security et al. or what he will do from a positive point to improve the lot of the citizenry. In his first term he spoke of infrastructure but only in terms of a wall at the border and even that was minimal. He promised better Obamacare but it never happened. By comparison Biden in his first year got a big infrastructure bill passed. Trump should be in jail for what was an attempt to lead an insurrection. There is no way to softsell that fact. We all watched in horror as thousands stormed the Capital and people were assaulted and were killed as a direct result of the action instigated by the man whose words inflamed the situation. He said then if he wins, the election is fair, but if he loses it’s fixed? and he continues with the same rhetoric. Who makes such a statement and yet people stand with him. I make no apologies when I use the term IDIOTS. If the majority believes he is better I say we will become an autocratic nation and it will spell the end of America as we know it. Biden is old no doubt but the governance is good. Most of those in positions of leadership in various departments are there because they have spent their career in the specific field not because they are political confidants and pledge allegiance to the man who is president. As to your point we need immigrants to stem the lack of growth in our population and while some percentage of those arriving may be evil no doubt, the fact is the vast majority just want to improve their lot in life and this country has always been the place where hard work and a vision can allow for that to happen. I know there are those who take issue with my comments but I make no apologies and as I state in the beginning, they are ignorant, brainless morons who don’t understand the seriousness of having a demagogue at the helm. This is not the time to overlook the danger of such a leader because as we all know they exist all around the world and the citizens of those countries become powerless to effect change once a such a strongman takes over. As good as our system of government is it will be of no use if those charged with upholding the laws that govern us are commandeered by people who pledge allegiance to Trump and not to the oath of office they hold .

Well said, unfortunately I think most Americans are too dumb to understand this

What is next? As Trump turns America into a mafia state, the next logical step would be for his minions to start selling residency and work permits under the table. The plan they already have prepared, to replace all key federal employees with “loyalists” and destroy the independence of the Justice Dept, would ensure a lack of any effective oversight. Trump is telling us exactly what he is going to do. People just choose to ignore or think it won’t affect them beside he is on “their side”.
