Regardless of who you favor …

before you vote, you might want to determine your candidates position on:

  • Keeping Social Security sustainable on an ongoing basis
  • Adequately funding Medicare
  • Deficits and the national debt
  • Support for Americas allies and western countries in general
  • Immigration reform and border security
  • The Affordable Care Act and striving to assure all Americans have coverage for health care
  • International trade and tariffs
  • The USA position and role in the world – isolationism
  • Dealing with climate change
  • Taxes – recognizing it will be impossible to meet all our obligations with taxes at current levels.

If these issues are not important to you, they surely will be to your children and grandchildren,

  1. Serious question. Is it actually even remotely possible that there is no law against serving as President from a prison cell? Some people claim it is.

    1. I think the Founding Fathers could not have envisioned that such a large number of Americans would becomes enamored with something as dumb and dangerous as MAGA. Or fervently believe that God annointed a reality show conn man to lead the country.

  2. Regarding your issues:
Keeping Social Security sustainable on an ongoing basis — “Keep”? Never was sustainably funded on an ongoing basis.
Adequately funding Medicare — “Fund”? Most of Medicare has always been pay as you go – “B” and “D”.
Deficits and the national debt — “Deficits” are the life blood of politicians and their vote buying. Taxpayers are ignored by members of Congress who, like Biden, promise stuff (student debt, waive rent, and expect others to pay. The national debt is simply the recognition that current voters who pay taxes are unwilling to pay more – so the federal government simply spends anyway to buy votes, and sends the bill to future generations. Haven’t you told your Congressman/Congressperson you already pay too much in taxes, that they are spending too much? I have. It is clear that we are paying much more in taxes, but the problem isn’t that we aren’t paying too much, it is that it is never enough to fund the vote-buying.
Support for Americas allies and western countries in general — “Support”? You forgot how Trump was so heavily criticized when he threatened other NATO countries that they were not holding up their end of the defense effort. Last I heard, we have had soldiers in Germany for nearly 80 years, and in South Korea for 70 years. Who else has funded a Navy sufficient to support our allies in their commerce and defense? Give me a break.
Immigration reform and border security — America has consistently been the most welcoming country for immigrants since its founding. We have almost as many foreign born residents, percentage wise, as any other country in the world, and more in nominal terms. That includes my mom.
The Affordable Care Act and striving to assure all Americans have coverage for health care — Those who want health coverage (not health care) have had access to perfectly acceptable health insurance long before the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. We’ve added 50+ MM people to taxpayer subsidized coverage since passage of PPACA in 2010. Time for those folks to shoulder more of the cost. Have you seen the recent add when they have three vignettes and two pay only about $10 a month and one gets it for free. What is your Medicare Part B and Part D premium – after 50+ years of paying income, and employment taxes?
    International trade and tariffs
The USA position and role in the world – isolationism — See prior notes on NATO, Germany, Korea, and add in Israel, Ukraine, etc.
Dealing with climate change – Makes no sense to waste Billions or Trillions of taxpayer dollars on stuff that doesn’t make a difference in light of India and China continuing to bring on line coal fired power plants averaging one a day or so.

Taxes – Recognizing it will be impossible to meet all our obligations with taxes at current levels — More? Once the politicians show some discipline in their outrageous spending, I will consider paying more taxes. The idiots expect to spend $7 Trillion (federal only), up from $2 Trillion just a decade or so ago. While our tax revenues have increased from about $2 Trillion to $5 Trillion. What do you think they would do if we gave them another Trillion or two a year? I know, without first showing some fiscal restraint, they would only spend more.

I don’t see anyone running for office who would embrace what you recommend, let alone what I believe is needed.

  3. Many of these topics can lead to false dilemmas. It would be a wise voter indeed who could sort out the future actions of a candidate with a list this long and what to do about each. Wait until next November and you can simply vote D or R.
