Tipping is a racist relic and a modern tool of economic oppression in the SouthRooted in Racism and Economic Exploitation: Spotlight
So says a detailed report from the Economic Policy Institute. No matter your views on the issue, the report provides an interesting history of tipping.
I’m not sure I agree it’s a tool of oppression, that seems a bit dramatic, but the different way people tip – or not – can be unfair to workers

Of course, we can’t forget that in the absence of tipping while applying the standard minimum wage to servers, prices will go up.
The question is, how much of these workers income should be controlled by customers?

Not sure why the EPI wanted to turn tipping into a racial thing, especially since most tipped employees are white. Don’t you do tipping in New Jersey and other points north? I guess it is just their left wingnut bias shining through. Anyway, the concept of tipping is in the news this year and presents a quandary. Tax tips or not, how to count it if taxed and how to demand employers count tips as part of payroll. I don’t think there is a drumbeat to do away with tipping as an institution so I say just do away with restaurants and other jobs that expect tips. That will solve the taxation dilemma and take care of the inherent racism as well.

if you are a lefty everything is seen in the context of race–gender–sexual orientation so, like you, I am not surprised–from what reading I have done (not a whole lot) the wait staff folks seem to prefer tips as opposed to pay, which sounds good to the uninitiated, but those on the front line seem to like what they can earn with tips–like you say, with Trump proposing tax-free tips this topic has some legs to it.
