The answer is as varied as the number of retirees.
Is it:
- Age in place
- Move to a smaller house
- How about a age 55+ community
- Perhaps a Continuous Care Retirement Community
Or maybe you have your eye on The Villages in Florida.
It’s not for me, but thousand like that lifestyle.

Whatever your choice, don’t wait until you retire to think about and plan your move – and think long term.

The wife and I moved to a smaller one level home where I thought we would stay when I was 59. However, some new grandkids popped up and we moved again 10 years later to be closer to them, again choosing a one level open floor plan. We’ve managed nicely here for the past 9 years. I haven’t found it be a burden at all so far. I like being on my own so to speak. If we need help with repairs, tree trimming or removal, window washing, or anything else I can get competent help when needed. The only drawback I can see for the future is if one of us should need the use of a wheelchair. That may be problematic inside due to some doorways, I don’t know but I will figure it out.
The idea of heading to a CCRC in my 60s was unthinkable at the time and I passed on an over 55 community when we last moved because the lots were small and the HOA regs seemed a little much for me.
