Tax-free Social Security benefits😱

Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) reintroduced legislation last week that would eliminate income taxes on Social Security benefits.

According to a press statement from Massie, if passed, the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act (HR 1040) will amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to terminate the inclusion of tier I railroad retirement benefits and Social Security benefits in an individual’s gross income. “As this legislation takes effect, seniors will notice their tax liability is significantly reduced and will no longer deal with the ‘double tax’ on their federally earned benefits,” Massie said.

No, funding Social Security with FICA is not double tax, because the FICA you paid does not fund your benefits.

How is the lost $50,000,000,000 in annual revenue to the SS trust and $35,000,000,000 to Medicare to be made up?

Unless there is a definitive plan to not only make up the lost revenue, but also assure Social Security and Medicare Trusts are solvent, this is beyond irresponsible and seniors and their advocates are being selfish.

  1. The taxable level should have been indexed to start with. This wouldn’t be an issue now if it had been. Because of inflation, the taxable benefit is starting to hurt people who depend on Social Security. So at least set up adjustment for inflation.

  2. Gee, I thought the money I paid had some semblance to my benefit?

Here is what we might do—no tax on my contributions as well as the contributions of the employer for my benefit.

Once the contributions are met then tax folks.

Just goes to show how when politicians are in charge of just about anything they are irresponsible.

Next we will hear we can improve our health care situation with Medicare for all. Social Security disaster on steriods.

    1. Social Security is far from a disaster and yes, the only viable solution for health care that includes everyone is M4A. (Not the Sanders version though) If you have a better idea let’s hear it. Nothing tried so far has worked. What is your objection to M4A. I have used Medicare for 15 years with no problems.
