If you were tasked with trying to bring efficiency and thus cost savings to a large complex organization, how would you do it and how long would it take?
First, in the case of government I would gather together all the inspectors general and get their input. Then I would have knowledgeable people review their most recent audit reports, assess the problems to see if corrective action had been taken.
I would ask the department heads to present their own ideas with a goal of reducing their budgets. They would also review staffing needs with justification.
After ideas had been gather, I would do a cost benefit review to determine the possible negative consequences on Americans of all cost cutting ideas, including staffing cuts.
It would take six months to a year to be done right.
I would not generate propaganda with false and misleading claims or create false promises or intentionally undermine confidence in our government and social programs.
I would work with Congress on setting the deficit on a downward direction which includes putting tax cuts on hold until they can be managed along with the deficit.
BUT YOU SEE, efficiency, sustainable and practical cost savings is not what DOGE or Trump or Musk are about. If it was an efficiency effort, there would not be firing of inspector generals, or any mass firing or rush to cancel contracts within a few weeks and it would not be using inexperienced Musk wannabes.

WHAT IT IS ABOUT is implementing a far right ideology about minimal government and minimal services to people. About consolidating power and control.
AMERICANS ARE A DISTANT SECOND consideration in reaching their goal.
It is very sad that so many Americans believe the rhetoric and can’t see what is happening. It is so sad Americans so easily can be made to lose faith in their own government.

It’s all true, but old. However, the article I posted is misleading since it gave the appearance that the issues were ongoing.

You are completely right. DOGE’s methods of getting rid of ‘fraud and waste’ only weakens the system, especially the Inspector Generals and IRS, leaving the door open to increased fraud and waste.
Anybody who agrees with DOGE, well, tell a fired employee’s mother and father that their child was contribution to fraud and waste by simply being a government employee.

You only fire inspector generals and auditors for one reason, to reduce transparency and accountability. If anything, the one thing DOGE has actually demonstrated (surprisingly) is how little actual waste and fraud there is in the government.

Dick, are you serious? I’ve worked in government – the definition of inefficiency and fraud, waste, and abuse. The IGs and department heads are the lynchpins of the “deep state.” Trump’s hatchet approach is the only way to do it.

Fraud? What fraud is committed by government or government employees? The fraud, such as it is, is committed by Americans. And what lasting value is created by mass firing? After all the cutting is done offices closed, services cut and millions of Americans are harmed, what has changed? We still have and will always have a massive bureaucracy. Government is not a thing, it is millions of people doing their job.

So you’ve entered the “fraud is good thing” phase?

Your method oof determining waste, fraud and abuse along with improving efficiency has been tried over the years by Carter and Reagan and led to no results of import. If the inspector general was worth the effort, we wouldn’t keep the government bloated. Have knowledgeable people look at a committee result? That’s called sweeping under the rug. All this has been done for years and the beat goes on.
Work with Congress on effective change? Your term would be up before you got to page 2. Sorry but when the whole hide bound system doesn’t want change, you won’t get change.
Tax cuts frighten you but unlimited spending frightens me. What’s the answer?

There is a right way and a way full of bluster and chain saws that is propaganda, inefficient and fleeting. You will gradually see it put back together bloating and all and guess what, for the most part it works and meets our needs. That doesn’t mean we give up on being efficient, but it won’t last unless we hold Congress accountable. That’s where the money is spent.
