Newsweek
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that there is a “concept” of a tariff rebate check for Americans.
When asked by a reporter during his cabinet meeting for an update about the prospects for tariff rebate checks, the president said:
“We have a lot of money coming in. It’s coming in tremendous numbers. There’s a concept of making a dividend to the people of this country who have paid a lot of taxes and got nothing for it.”
“There’s a possibility. Primarily we want to pay down debt, but there’s a possibility that we take a piece of it and make a dividend to the people.”
A responsible, rational person – a president would explain the financial issues we face, the state of Social Security and Medicare. Explain where our tax money goes and why it’s important. Honestly explain how tariffs work.
He’s not paying down debt, he is adding to it and if anything the tariffs you pay will lower the additional deficit from his OBBBA, not pay down any existing debt.
The great majority of Americans do not pay a lot of taxes.

A huckster is a person who uses aggressive or deceptive tactics to sell goods, services, or ideas, often with an emphasis on persuasion over honesty. It commonly implies someone engaging in exaggerated or unscrupulous marketing, like a con artist or a flamboyant salesperson…or an incompetent president.

“It is long past time for every American with income to pay federal income taxes.”
“…provocative per usual Jack–I love the insights and facts–keep up the good work.”
Even Trump knows that won’t work.

I have been reading this blog for a long time and Quinn indeed has been even handed, probably too much so, as we see now what the real threat is, probably far too late at this point to stop it. Don’t let the two Russian bots that always comment here dissuade you…

what is about the term “lefties” you find annoying? I always hear about “right wing”–“ultra right wing”–“extreme right wing” and it goes on and on– well, lefty is just that, a term of endearment I use–should I now use socialist? what about “early communist”?
what have they done? want to start with 10 million or so illegals crossing the border and labeling folks who want the law enforced as racists and bigots?
telling me the president was not demented and healthy as a horse.
what about using pronouns and forcing others to do it–a good friend is a stock trader with a large firm we all know and earlier this year on the desk he was asked by someone in the firm to limit the use of Fox News as her interns when passing by were getting freaked out.
how about birth certificates in some communities in blue states that read; “boy” “girl”–TBD (to be decided) when a child is born.
what about one of the weirdos who recently resigned from CDC who refers to some folks as “birthing persons”–next time a guy has a child let me know. Seems to be a popular term as evidenced by the Dems who just met in the Twin Cities for their convention and loved using the term. Maybe it should be on their banned list.
I know a lot of lefties–most very nice–but; “they have a plan for me and a plan for themselves–the plan for me never includes them and their plan never includes me.
Once the illegals came north all hell broke lose is a good example.

Here is a favorite post of mine, that Dick repeated/launched separately in 2016.

I can’t wait to hear; “what the real threat is?” I am always amused by folks who tell me they know what the “truth” is–but the real threat??? don’t hold back!

When you describe hucksters, you aren’t describing politicians and not just Trump. For many years the President has played to his base. Tossing bones out to keep the base happy. This is especially true since the income tax was put into play. It gives a lever to make folks feel better even if it makes things worse in the long run. Trump wasn’t born yesterday, he knows the score.
Sure you could tell everybody the hard facts and your voters move on over to the next huckster. That’s not the way politicians play, they like their jobs.

Definitely a huckster.
And, yes “The great majority of Americans do not pay a lot of taxes.” And, yes, a great minority of Americans with income don’t pay any federal income taxes, either.
What’s the solution? Well, if we are not all rowing in the same direction, we won’t make much progress. It is long past time for every American with income to pay federal income taxes.
When 40% of Americans with income are either paying $0 income taxes or actually getting refundable income tax credits funded by current and future taxpayers (deficit spending), why would anyone be surprised to hear that other Americans who are paying federal income taxes year after year would like to get a rebate, too.
That’s the crap that President Biden tapped into when, in 2021, after the pandemic was over and vaccines were available all across America, he sent a ton of vote buying checks to Americans.
Why didn’t you complain just as loudly when Obama, Trump 1, and Biden increased the national debt from $10 Trillion to $36 Trillion, adding $25 Trillion to our national debt after the Great Recession was over, through unfunded entitlements such as coverage expanding through Health Reform (March 2010 – January 2025)?
And, why blame Trump alone when it is Congress who has the power of the purse and decides budgets, deficits, etc. Trump can’t do crap, in terms of taxes, rebate checks, whatever, without Congressional approval.

Jack; too many facts for Quinn–remember, like many others he suffers from TDS and anything misleading is a word he only associates with one person–asking him why there was no blame for the other debt makers (he seems to think Congress has no role) is whistling in the wind– answers to logical questions seldom, if ever, get answered–if you know who can’t be blamed then it didn’t happen.
provocative per usual Jack–I love the insights and facts–keep up the good work.

You have not read this blog long enough to see what I have said in the past. In any case, who did what in the past does not explain or justify what is now being done, to people, to our economy, our country now.
And even worse, the real harmful impacts will not be realized for several years.

If you look back over the years, you will see I have complained about all that in the past- debt, deficits, unnecessary stimulus checks, Congress.
But nothing in the past compares to today.

“But nothing in the past compares to today.” That is especially true about your criticism of the idiot ass Trump. Your criticisms of past presidents weren’t even softballs.
I don’t recall any Hitler comparisons to actions by past presidents. Show me the mustasche drawings.
As bad as the idiot ass Trump is, he’s no dictator and certainly, no mass murderer Nazi like Hitler.
When you accuse him, characterize him of those things, you look foolish – you undermine even your best arguments.

could not have said it better–once you get away from the big spending areas like SS, Medicare, Medicaid, brother Quinn seems to be over his skis–this is what happens to so many folks on these issues–best to pass the blame around and also the praise–try to be an honest broker–Jack excoriates Trump but places so many topics in historical perspective.
just read that Pres. Truman called all the Fed governors to the White House way back when to “jawbone” them about policy and rates before we went into the Korean War–the past keeps popping up.
Did your excuse for saying nothing while millions if illegals flooded in qualify as a harmful impact, thus “nothing in the past compares to today.”
Hanging black men from trees during the era of Jim Crow–I’d say that was far worse than “nothing in the past compares to today.”
Why don’t you list a few things you see as never happening before and we can discuss them–as I say to my lefty friends; “don’t be afraid”. “just be as historically accurate as you can”.
Reprint one or two of those columns where you are critical of Obama–Biden–Harris.
