Obama acts to stop loss of individual health insurance coverage for 2014 😴

Here’s the proposed fix.

People can keep coverage that was in effect before March 2010 even if it is not grandfathered under the law because changes have been made to the plan.

People can keep coverage that they bought since March 2010.

Letters will be sent to state insurance commissioners telling them that insurance carriers won’t be required under the federal health law to drop policies because they don’t meet the new coverage standards in 2014. So the onus is now on state insurance commissioners to keep the policies. What he is really saying is that you now can’t blame the Affordable Care Act, if you can’t keep your policy, blame your sate insurance commission. 😡

It remains to be seen how this can be done administratively and still be legal, but that dilemma is nothing new with the Obama administration. 😈 It is also unclear what impact this fix will have on premiums in exchange plans that set premiums for 2014 based on certain assumptions which included people with individual coverage moving to the exchanges, especially young and healthy. Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Insurers must tell customers what is not included in their coverage that is required by the Affordable Care Act. Insurers must also explain what the exchange plans offer that is better, including the availability of tax credits.

All this is effective for 2014 only which delays, but does not fix the problem for people who truly not only like the plan they have, but more important like and rely on their doctors who participate in their current plan. Given the limited provider networks in many exchange plans, this is an ongoing major issue for some, especially sick people.

As usual, his remarks blamed insurance companies and alluded to them now raising premiums 20% or not covering prescription drugs under the extended policies. The President said they underestimated the general complexity of selecting insurance and it was not as easy as buying a song on iTunes … really? 🙈🙉🙊

They should have asked some of us who have been doing this in corporations for a few decades.

“How we (government) purchase IT is complex, cumbersome and outdated and it’s one of the reasons government projects are behind schedule and over budget” da ya think?

He also attempted to deflect attention from Democrats who voted for the law and told people they should blame him (who can’t run for re-election) and not their representatives. 😇 And he rambled on about health care not working and justifying Obamacare.

  1. Dick, can you tell me where I can buy one of these substandard policies? I can’t wait. Come January, I will buy one, and then litigate that the insurance companies are breaking the law. I will have standing as a consumer who was sold a policy that violates the law.

If the insurance companies are run by idiots, they will sell or continue existing non-compliant policies.

And if I can’t buy one, all I need to do is find someone who has one – what a great class action lawsuit opportunity.

  2. I think anyone with half a brain in their head will see that this is just a stall intended to get past the 2014 election. After that, we will be right back where we are today. It has nothing to do with helping people unless those people are running for re-election and are worried that blowback from Obamacare will hurt their chances.

  3. what a complete joke! This man is loosing credibility by the second. Any diversion, deflection and can kicking down the road…to buy time anything but changing the law itself. Does he legally have the right to change things like this?….maybe yes as he is impacting the regulations per se .or maybe this is like another executive order.
