The Great Recession demonstrated just how vulnerable many Americans were. Many Americans were not only not prepared for financial emergencies, many were living far above their means, “owned” homes they could not afford, depended on every penny of a two income family, had inadequate general and retirement savings, used home equity to preserve lifestyles and more. Naturally, when the recession hit, the house of cards collapsed. It’s normal these people would feel cheated, and look for someone other than themselves to blame.
They had ready allies in many politicians more than willing to advance their ideology by providing scapegoats and promoting the notion of inequality, declining opportunity and uneven income distribution.
Apparently, convincing Americans they are victims is not all that hard, especially when it relieves their need to take responsibility for their actions.
What exactly does dissatisfied with income and wealth distribution mean? Do you simply envy a person with more money? Do you think a person who works 70 hours a week and earns ten times what you earn should simply give half their income to other people? How is it possible to be dissatisfied with what other people achieve? I wonder if these people are dissatisfied enough to stop going to movies and concerts or to stop watching professional sports in protest of the wealth of celebrates?
We have serious problems if any American believes there is a way income and wealth should be distributed. Our President and his allies are undermining the very essence of America by fostering an entitlement mentality, by creating scapegoats and by convincing people the ultimate solution is more government control. Look at the history of many European countries and see where all this has led in the past.
The only thing people have a right to be dissatisfied with is any contrived lack of opportunity. We can do better supporting opportunity, but wealth redistribution is not how to do it.
