Social Security and Medicare Ignored

Every years the Trustees for Social Security and Medicare issue their report and in recent years the report has contained the following urging which has been ignored year after year.

Whether you are young or old you should be concerned by the lack of action and incompetence of your elected officials.

One and perhaps the main reason they don’t act is because they fear backlash from voters. No matter what they do, some group (namely the AARP) and individuals will not be happy. This is effectively a war between young andck
old, those who think they paid for their benefits and those who actually are paying for current benefits and hope to have their own some day.

Unless we support responsible reform and shared pain between young and old, we will all be losers.

Conclusion

Lawmakers should address the financial challenges facing Social Security and Medicare as soon as possible. Taking action sooner rather than later will leave more options and more time available to phase in changes so that the public has adequate time up to prepare.
