Can someone explain this immigration thing?

According to the New York Times the President will soon grant “temporary” legal status to as many as 5 million illegal immigrants, virtually all of them Hispanic.

The White House is gambling on a surge of support from immigrants and Latinos that would make Republicans think carefully about how far to go to halt the programs. Latino groups are mobilized, pressing the president to include as many as seven million immigrants.

“The time for big, bold, unapologetic administrative relief is now,” said José Calderón, president of the Hispanic Federation, a nonprofit advocacy group.

Frankly, I don’t understand all this. If anyone else does, please explain.

1⃣ Why isn’t illegal illegal anymore?
2⃣ Why do we keep talking about immigration reform when we all know it is all about immigrants from Mexico and Central America?
3⃣ Why would Americans of Latino decent support such actions to legalize illegal immigrants thereby increasing competition for jobs and more?
4⃣ What are the pros and cons of doing this and the potential impact on American minority groups?
5⃣ Why can’t we have real reform that includes more work visas and citizenship for those with STEM skills we desperately need?
6⃣ What is the USA doing to pressure and support changes in the home countries of these individuals to limit their need to emigrate?
7⃣ Why can’t America meet its workforce and other needs through legal immigration?
8⃣ What does immigration reform really look like?
9⃣ Is there real value in all this or is it playing politics trying to gain support from one group of Americans?

Please speak up on this one!

  1. Let’s be clear what the law Reagon signed did. Is this what Obama has in mind?

    The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), Pub.L. 99–603, 100 Stat. 3445, enacted November 6, 1986, also known as the Simpson-Mazzoli Act, signed into law by Ronald Reagan on November 6, 1986, is an Act of Congress which reformed United States immigration law. The Act[1]

    required employers to attest to their employees’ immigration status;
    made it illegal to hire or recruit illegal immigrants knowingly;
    legalized certain seasonal agricultural illegal immigrants, and;
    legalized illegal immigrants who entered the United States before January 1, 1982 and had resided there continuously with the penalty of a fine, back taxes due, and admission of guilt; candidates were required to prove that they were not guilty of crimes, that they were in the country before January 1, 1982, and that they possessed minimal knowledge about U.S. history, government, and the English language.

      Reagan was the first president to let the camel’s nose under the tent…
      that is, to give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Republicans and
      Democrats have been playing good cop/bad cop for many decades.
      But in reality there is not a dime’s worth of difference between them.
      Much of the nation-destroying policies have come during Republican
      administrations… when their [so-called] “conservative base” appears
      to go back to sleep.

    Don’t forget… the darling of Republican conservatives, Reagan,
    was the first president to give amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants.

    1. Don’t forget… the above sentence used “millions” to mislead the reader. The truth: President Reagan gave amnesty to only 2.5 million, not the 5-7 million President Obama is contemplating. The rest had to leave. President Obama says there are 12 millions illegal immigrants in the US. If he would enforce the law and kick out 9.5 million of them, a law to give amnesty to the remaining 2.5 million would sail through the Congress.

      As for Richard’s list above, I can only speak to #3. I used to work in Los Angeles, in a department that was almost all Mexican-Americans (born in America). None of them supported this amnesty BS. They were flat out embarrassed to be associated with illegal immigrants.

        tsk tsk

        Are you claiming to be psychic ?

        You claim to know my motive for using the correct plural, “millions”, which means two or more.

    I could give you the Biblically and historically based answer…
    but it would be so far out in left field from this society’s norms
    people would dismiss it.

    We are in a similar historical pattern that happened over
    2500 years ago… when the known world was under the
    rule of an ancient evil empire that conducted constant war,
    intentionally uprooting people from their native lands, moving
    them around the empire and moving foreigners into their lands.
    No nation was able to stand up against this ancient evil empire…
    until one man did. That man is mentioned both in secular history
    and in the Bible [but many Christians never hear about him.]
    He conquered the ancient evil empire and returned its captive
    people back to their native lands.
