How Federal Officials Think About “Affordable”

Excerpt from New York Times article 12-9-15

Kevin J. Counihan, the chief executive of the federal insurance marketplace, said federal subsidies, in the form of tax credits, would make insurance affordable throughout the country. “Eight in 10 consumers can find coverage for less than $75 a month after those subsidies,” Mr. Counihan said.

If insurance premiums are going up double digit percentages despite rising out-of-pocket costs and more restricted networks,  how is that demonstrating affordability?

What may be more affordable for the individual, is not all that affordable to taxpayers. If 80% of some ten million Americans are paying less than $75 for something that costs several times that amount who do you think is paying the rest? And recall that $75 a month is considerably LESS than a person on Medicare pays.
