Adult child coverage to age 26 now in effect. Here are the rules

January 1, 2011 marks the start of coverage for many adult children under the parent’s health insurance coverage.  Technically, this coverage must be make available at the start of the first plan year after September 23, 2010.  Most plans are on a calendar year basis so January 1 is the date.  Some employers and insurers made the change effective before January first and a significant minority have plan years other than a calendar year, typically July 1.

You should check with your plan to see which date applies to you.  As a refresher, here are the rules related to enrollment of adult children.  One main point is that children do not have to be dependent on you for support in order to be eligible for coverage.
