SSA considers raising retirement age for solvency

“Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano said in an interview that raising the retirement age could be a way to address a potential insolvency issue in 2034, when the Social Security Trust Fund is expected to be depleted.”

Fear not, the Social Security Administration cannot raise the retirement age.

Any change to the SS retirement age must be initiated by members of Congress through a bill. The last time the retirement age was increased was in the Social Security Amendments of 1983.
