Withdrawing from the world ala Trump

Short-sighted, arrogant and stupid.

This is not what a “great” country does. It leads, sets a positive example. It doesn’t abdicate.

I don’t need anyone or any country

The most sweeping action occurred on January 7, 2026, when Trump signed a presidential memorandum directing the U.S. to withdraw from 66 international organizations, 31 of which are part of the UN system.

Major UN Entities Affected

The administration has targeted organizations it deems “wasteful, ineffective, or contrary to U.S. interests.” Key withdrawals include:

UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC): The U.S. ceased participation and funding early in 2025.

UNESCO: The administration announced plans to leave in July 2025, a process expected to conclude by late 2026. (UNESCO, which stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is a specialized agency of the United Nations aimed at promoting world peace and security through international cooperation) Established in 1945, it is most famous for its work in preserving cultural heritage and natural sites, but its reach extends into almost every facet of global intellectual life.

The United States is home to 26 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ranging from awe-inspiring natural wonders like the Grand Canyon to cultural landmarks like the Statue of Liberty. These sites are recognized for their “outstanding universal value” to humanity. What possible reason is there to not support this organization?

UNRWA: Funding was prohibited for the UN Relief and Works Agency, which provides aid to Palestinian refugees

  • World Health Organization (WHO): Trump initiated this withdrawal immediately upon taking office in January 2025.
  • Other UN Entities: The list includes UN Women, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and various regional economic commissions (for Africa, Latin America, etc.

  1. UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC): Includes: China, Cuba and others… How much human rights will you get from a group that includes those folks.

UNRWA: Based on Israeli intelligence and reports from early 2024–2025, over 1,400 employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza (approximately 12% of the workforce) were identified as members of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Intelligence linked at least 12 employees to direct participation in the October 7, 2023, attacks, with evidence showing staff loading bodies and operating within Hamas military structures. Your monies funded those attacks, in part. Welcome to the real world.

World Health Organization (WHO): The WHO was criticized for not declaring a global health emergency sooner, and for allowing China to take charge of the initial investigation. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) investigations were hampered by limited access to data, political pressure, and lack of cooperation from China. A 2021 WHO mission to Wuhan initially found a natural zoonotic spillover most likely and deemed a lab leak “extremely unlikely.”

The report says, ‘China won’t give us access to the data we need, so, we will agree that even though the virus first appeared in workers at the Wuhan lab, well, that was just a coincidence, right?

Do you want YOUR tax dollars going to support these folks? I do not!

Fact is that the UN groups as well as many other non-Governmental organizations too frequently work at cross purposes to democracy, human rights, even peace.

Long past time to call those organizations to account, to change.

    1. So we give up, look the other way with no better alternatives. Perfect fit with the Trump personality. The U.S. may be large, rich (sort of) and powerful, but we are still only about 4% of the world population and we should think about that.

I paid an 18% effective tax rate and guess what, it doesn’t bother me.

      50% of taxpayers pay 3.7%.

I have no problem spending a tiny percentage of the federal budget on foreign aid or the UN.

I’d try and follow a reasonable course to make things better rather than take my marbles and go home like an immature, short-sighted bully.

Guess what, I never voted for a Democrat in my life – except out of desperation the last election.
