Have I got a job for you

Member of Congress job requirements

Prior experience: most often professional, typically attorney or business owner

You must relocate to one of highest cost cities in the Country – or maintain two residences.

Job guarantee: Two years

Frequent travel involved, periods of family separation routine

Typical work week: 50-60 hours

The perception of Congress’s job requirements, work and compensation held by too many Americans is ignorant and just stupid.

Salary: $174,000, no raises (last 2009) no bonuses, no overtime pay

Contributory pension with five year vesting – you must be re-elected twice in the House

Contributory health insurance, limited choice

Vacation: you are on duty 24/7

Job satisfaction: highly variable, must be team player and follow complicated rules and procedures. Numerous meetings involved

Staff management required

Continuous fund raising required

You wouldn’t want the job, quite likely could not do the job.

Looks like a cushy job. Right? Wrong‼️‼️

If you don’t like the job an incumbent is doing, fire them, stop voting them in office year after year, but that is something distinct from adequate compensation.

There is no “them” they are Americans doing a job just like everyone else – some good, some bad, some okay … why expect anything else?

  1. Did I not read somewhere that Congress was gettin a new reimbursement plan in 2023 that covered meals, lodging and incidentals that effectively equaled a pay raise? This was over and above basic salary. You didn’t mention it.

    1. In 2023, Members of Congress did not receive a “personal” expense allowance for their private use, but they were provided with significant official allowances to run their offices and represent their constituents.

These funds are strictly for official business—such as hiring staff, renting office space, and traveling—and cannot be used for personal living expenses.
