“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts” —- often attributed to the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan—is one of the most timeless reminders in modern discourse.
It hits the nail on the head:
- Opinions are grounded in values, perspectives, and personal preferences.
- Facts are grounded in verifiable reality and evidence.
When debate shifts from interpreting facts to inventing them, constructive conversation usually goes out the window. It’s a solid principle to live by!
Our President sets a poor example in this regard. He routinely lies, misleads and invents his own facts. I can’t help but feel his example is affecting what too many people are willing to post on social media.
I simply call it nonsense, but it’s far worse because many people accept the lies and misinformation and pass it around. Some of the misinformation is repeated so often it falls into the propaganda category where repeating lies causes people to believe them.
