When these programs and laws were being debated, they were called socialism, even communism by opponents using scare tactics to protect their own interests. The Fair Labor Standards Act was called “the road to Communism” by industry opponents.
Several Republicans labeled the Affordable Care Act socialism – it’s not and it’s not socialized medicine either.
• Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) described it on the House floor as “the crown jewel of socialism” and “socialized medicine” during debates over repeal efforts.
• Reps. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) and Steve King (R-IA) publicly labeled it socialism, with Gohmert arguing that government control of health care payments and decisions represented socialist control over individual lives.
• Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) framed opposition to repeal as a choice between the free market and “Stalin-type socialism.”
The programs are not socialist or communist. Yet today the same scare tactics are being used by the Trump administration irresponsibly ranting about socialism and communism when actually talking about social safety net programs helping the American people.
Trump has recently made socialism and especially communism a major theme of his political messaging, particularly ahead of the 2026 midterm elections even calling individual candidates Marxist.
Pure scare tactics aimed at the uninformed and uneducated.
