America in twenty-five years. Exactly where are we headed and will it be a better place?

Let’s forget politics for a moment, the left, right, and conservative or progressive, let’s take a step back and look at where we are and where we may be going as a country.

There are a few facts to consider:

  •  We have managed to accumulate the largest national debt in history and growing.
  • We have a growing number of Americans who pay no income tax, about 42% at present.
  • We have politicians pushing class warfare and promoting government intervention and entitlements.
  • We have a growing number of Americans working for government at all levels.
  • We have a growing number of Americans dependent on one or more government programs from Social Security and Medicare to rebates on automobiles and soon health insurance and much, much more.
  • The Greatest Generation is rapidly disappearing and the baby boomers are about to begin their lives on entitlements. The upcoming generations never sacrificed much and have new standards of an acceptable lifestyle and to large extent unique views on personal responsibility.
  • Education is lagging especially in the areas of math and science.
  • I will add one of my personal favorites. Way too many Americans have no sense of history or the fundamentals of civics.

Add all of this up and what do you get, what will American look like in twenty-years?  There are some who welcome our apparent direction.  Others take a decidedly opposite view.

The real questions are will America be able to sustain its high standard of living, and will America be a leader in creativity and innovation in the years ahead?  Will our children and grandchildren have unlimited opportunities or be overburden with taxes?  Will mediocrity be the acceptable norm?  Will America be a world leader or one among many?

I have my views on this, I am not optimistic.

  1. Good Post Dick, I believe that we have a whole lot of people with there heads in the sand. Most have no idea the trouble we are in nor do they care as long the plastic card is still accepted. And when that one is max’d, just open a new one. Just like the government, deficit spend and just borrow more from our enemies. It is about time the government gets after these large corporations (GE and the like) and get them to pay their fair share of taxes.
