The AARP represents who?

As any regular reader knows, I am no fan of the AARP even though I have a membership to get the discounts. They don’t represent me or my views on much and it appears most of what they do is sell stuff to seniors through an array alliances with profit-making entities, mostly insurance companies. They sure crowd my mail box with junk.

Nevertheless, politicians (especially Democrats) see the AARP as the group representing everyone over age 50 in America; perception is reality as they say and AARP does a good job with perception.

That is why I was fascinated to read a September 21 opinion peace in the Wall Street Journal. What role did the AARP play in passing Obamacare and did the organization reflect the views of the people it says it represents, read the article for yourself here.

  1. AARP does not represent my views.
My rant is about this free memebership they have for existing members.
They allow the member to sign up a friend, even if that ‘friend’ does not want to be a member and has told the member not to sign them up.

No veification if the referenced person wants to be a member or not.
Just take on another new member and claim an increse in membership.

I called them to remove me from the membership and they claim they did.
But how much of my personal info that was given to them without my consent did they keep?

    1. You’ll know the answer to your question when you see how much junk mail you get from organizations selling stuff “approved” by AARP. Good luck.

  2. I have not joined AARP because of their political positions. They are not helpful in educating seniors, or anyone else, about the unsustainability of both Social Security and Medicare as they are now constituted. The AARP uses scare tactics and half-truths as many so-called special interest groups do. Instead of being an honest broker of informatoin, they are a one-sided and self-interested business, albeit, a business classified as non-profit.
