The title of this blog post is actually the headline on a Huffington Post article. The words caught my attention because to me that goal makes a great deal of sense. What is wrong with people paying for basic health care services?
The Huffington Post article goes on to say the Romney plan is to promote high deductible health plans and Health Savings Accounts. Under such plans there is a large upfront deductible before benefits are paid. For a detailed description of the HDHP take a look at this blog post.. The Romney plan is more complex than that, but from what I can see it does no more to control health care costs than Obamacare.
Not to worry (or jump for joy as the case may be) Obamacare will never be repealed and making high deductible health plans the cornerstone of a national plan is naive if not just silly.
However, we should not lose site of the fact that Americans will pay for health care in one way or the other. High deductible health plans have lower premiums than traditional plans so it’s simply a matter of pay now or pay later. The more generous we demand our coverage to be the more unaffordable it will be (and the more costly government subsidies will be). This leads to a logical conclusion to my way of thinking …..
Getting back to the basic purpose of insurance, including paying out-of-pocket for basic, predictable and affordable expenses is a good idea.
