The Sixteenth Amendment

AMENDMENT XVI

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

Ratified February 3, 1913

Talk about long-term consequences, from these few words look at the mess we have gotten ourselves into… millions of words of law and regulation, billions of dollars each year in compliance and millions of hours spent trying to figure out what to pay and how to pay the least amount. But the worst part is successive Congresses finding ways to spend more and more from this endless pool of money.

There is one more amendment we need.

Each elected Member of the House of Representatives, the United States Senate and the President of the United States shall serve a term in office of six years and shall thereafter be ineligible to serve further in elected Federal office of the United States.

  1. Hi Dick, maybe should get this amendment implemented also:

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: “Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States.”

  2. This sounds good, but since it would require members of congress in safe seats to vote against having life time jobs, it has little chance of being adopted.

  3. Seems like a reasonable approach but sadly term limits will probably never happen. On a slightly different note one of the things that really bothers me is Congress passing laws and being exempt from them.Unless I am mistaken Congress and the Executive Branch are NOT subject to Obamacare. Is this correct? If so why should they be exempt from it if it such a great program ?Is it any wonder that Congress has approval ratings worse than used car salesman!

    1. Congress is actually part of the federal employees health benefits program and is subject to Obamacare the same as the million or so other federal employees and families.

      1. Thanks for the clarification Dick. That is a good thing.i guess I saw some misinformation about Congress exempting themselves from the law.Would not have been surprised if they did something like that.

  4. Sounds good. But, all that does is put the power into the hands of the staffers and more power in the executive branch as well. We would all be better off if everyone respected the 10th Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
