Let’s hope Mr. Obama understands that it takes two parties to end a war … unless one surrenders

2013

Recently with regard to the war on terror, Mr. Obama said, “This war, like all wars, must end. “That’s what history advises. That’s what our democracy demands.”

As reported by the WSJ, the president approved new policies this week that appeared to stiffen requirements for strikes—stating, for example, that the U.S. will only target suspected terrorists who pose a “continuing and imminent threat to the American people,” rather those who pose a “significant threat to U.S. interests,” the standard outlined by the White House in 2012, according to administration officials.

No sane person can argue against ending a war, but ending a war on any terms may have long term adverse consequences … think North Korea. My judgement is that you cannot apply the experience of the past, such as Vietnam, to the present situation. The war on terror by definition is undefined, there are no fronts, no single enemy, no rational position or goal of the enemy to understand.

If for example, we could know that a total American withdraw from every Middle East country where we are not wanted would bring total peace, we may have something. But of course, that would also mean we would turn our back on any abuses we perceive occur in those countries that offend of sensibilities of human rights and social justice. North Korea continually threatens war and now even intimates a nuclear attack on the US; this from a country that we support with humanitarian aid in the light of their continual military build up. Our rational thinking in this regard is questionable.

Mr. Obama’s public pronouncements in regard to our strategy are irresponsible even if the policies were sound. There are terrorists in a score of countries and perhaps more bent on doing harm to America and Americans around the world based on some set of grievances that only they understand. The West sees Syria as a fight between the good guys and the bad guys, the bad guy being a dictator and yet one sect of Muslims fights to support the dictator against another sect of Muslims. Is any of this understandable to anyone outside the region? These are people who routinely employ suicide bombers to achieve their goals. But what we don’t seem to comprehend is the willingness of young men and women to be suicide bombers and what that tells us.

If our President could send emissaries to every terrorist group in the world and say, “Hey guys, enough is enough, we are taking a hands off position. You guys do whatever you want to whom every you want, but leave Americans alone and we will go way, we have had enough,” perhaps then the “war” would end. Even if that were not just fantasy, is that what Americans want?

Mr. Obama is playing politics again in my view and quite dangerously. Given we have no single enemy to defeat, simply declaring that this war on terror must end is appealing, but naive. To truly make this end, we must give the terrorists what they seek. The President should tell us what that is and what price we have to pay to capitulate. Until then we are doing what we always do, kick the can to the next generation.

  1. Sadly Mr. Wilson doesn’t or doesn’t want to understand that the many situations we have found ourselves beset by, Ft. Hood, Benghazi, Boston, etc. have all been enacted by radical Muslims and Mr. Obama’s handling of each of these has been questionable at best. This latest fiasco of handling strikes differently only serves to further diminish our standing in the world as a strong principled nation. Something he has done very to date on other fronts. We are no longer regarded as a strong and caring nation and our relationships with partners like Israel have diminished greatly and the world sees that.

The problem of dealing as effectively as possible with radical Muslim extremists, in my opinion, is that they have outsmarted us by realizing that we have a weak and indecisive President who has surrounded himself with mostly incompetent staff members who would be terminated for failing to perform had they worked in industry.

This is not a Republican, Democrat or Independent problem, it’s a National problem and this President has failed to assure Americans that they are safer today than in the past. That is a national disgrace and a threat to all Americans especially those who voted the President into office.

    1. Dan – Just type, “I don’t like President Obama because he’s half black and everything is his fault” – you’ll save time.

      1. Congratulation Jerry you are not a liberal as I thought. I have been trying to figure out for the last five years how a man half black and half white was always referred to as our first black president when he had an equal chance of just being just another white male president.

      2. I’m sure you’ve noticed, Mr. Quinn, that when races mix, the caucasian genes and traits are not dominant when it comes to the appearance of the offspring. It’s really not a question of liberalism or conservatism. Rather, it IS the result of knowing the facts, the truth and history versus the political spin, outright lies and huge exaggerations trumpeted unendingly by the Republican Far Right and their Faux Nuz propaganda machine. I am a Political Science major, a political junky and a news junky. Posters like Dan help me understand how people like Michelle Bachman, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul get elected. The Republican Far Right is impeding and obstructing everything that our president is trying to accomplish for our country. That behavior should be rejected by the voters in 2014, but with people like poster Dan alive, it may not happen. I can remember a time when both Democrats and Republicans worked together for the good of our nation regardless of which party had just lost the last election. Elected congress members cared more about the strength of our nation than preserving their own jobs. As you recently posted, term limits are the only answer. May I suggest that you begin a tutorial for people without health insurance and instruct them how to proceed under the Affordable Healthcare Act? Clear and concise direction for people such as one of my sons who is currently “between opportunities” and has no health insurance.

  2. WIth various sects and tribes of Muslim people in the Middle East sworn to kill each other every day, what possible good could come of American intervention? The Western concept of “human rights” is not in their psyche so don’t babble on about that. Thousands of Americans killed and injured in Iraq and Afghanistan has accomplished absolutely nothing. Stand aside and let the Muslims kill each other off. And, don’t feed their refugees. Fund the CIA and the FBI to find those that may threaten us and take them out with drones everywhere in the world. How many Republican-sponsored losing wars do you have to live through before you see the light? I’m sure you know that weapons of war are manufactured in red states that boast of low unemployment. Don’t criticize Obama’s policies unless you have better ideas and I don’t think that you do. If the House were not dominated by Republicans from carefully Gerrymandered districts, and right-wing Tea Party obstructionists (Ted Cruz stated that he does not trust Democrats or Republicans); this nation would be fully recovered and prosperous again after following Obama’s formulas for economic recovery and international relations. Stick to healthcare issues, Quinn, where your opinion is valued.

    1. If only it were that simple. Remember, for two years Obama and the Democrats had total control and could have pulled or military totally out of the Middle East. I suspect sadly there is good reason he didn’t; probably reasons we will never know.

      1. War on drugs; pretty much over, drugs won. War on terror, not going so well at last observation. Maybe there’s a better way to deal with stuff than calling it a war and going at it with a military mindset.
