Below is an actual job requirement description from a job posting. Having done this kind of work for fifty years and retiring as a VP- Compensation and Benefits, I can tell you that you cannot justify a BA/BS as required and a Masters will add no value to this work. Look at the other requirements, do you think you learn any of this earning a BA/BS? Then look at the requirement to be proficient in Microsoft Office, does that sound like a college based requisite?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m in favor of a good education for everyone if for no other reason than enlightenment. However, the routine acceptance that a non specific degree is required for virtually every white-collar position is not justified. Such a requirement added to position descriptions means nothing except the possible exclusion of the best most experienced candidate. Requiring STEM related degrees in STEM positions is one thing; but the routine, even automatic placement of a BS requirement on job is …. BS.

Desired Skills & Experience

BA/BS required
Masters Degree, CEBS or CBA preferred
Miinimum 10 years in benefits management, including large company experience
At least 5 years of management experience
Technical and functional knowledge of health and welfare, including the recently enacted Affordable Care Act, ERISA and HIPAA requirements
Must have worked with implementing and supporting outsourced plan administration along with experience overseeing the related HRIS and payroll systems interface requirements
Experience working with contract / vendor management, service level agreements and complex time-sensitive issues impacting the delivery of benefits services
Strong customer service focus, highly organized, responsible, and detail-oriented with demonstrated planning and project management skills
Sound communication and collaboration skills and HR acumen
Proficiency required in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and Outlook required, PowerPoint preferred
This position reports directly to the Senior Director, Benefits & Relocation and directly supervises Manager, Benefits Delivery and a Senior Benefits Analyst Responsible for wellness and benefits communications.
