Illegal immigrants whose most serious offense was listed as a traffic violation

2014

A recent NYT article relates that the Obama Administration has greatly increased deportation of illegal immigrants and is being criticized for doing so. I realize this has grown to a complicated and emotional issue, but someone needs to enlighten me on all this.

Most serious offense was drunk driving? Devastating immigrant communities? Simply because they drive without a license?

Interesting spin on the whole situation given their most serious offense was actually entering a country illegally. Do we have immigration laws or not? Have we redefined illegal? So if you do something illegal, but it devastates a family, what you have done shouldn’t matter? That would apply to most of the people in jail today would it not?

Why don’t we stop pretending we are talking about immigration reform and talk about immigrants from Mexico and Central America and find a real, fair solution? Perhaps we should ask Putin’s advice about Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.

The records show the largest increases were in deportations involving illegal immigrants whose most serious offense was listed as a traffic violation, including driving under the influence. Those cases more than quadrupled from 43,000 during the last five years of President George W. Bush’s administration to 193,000 during the five years Mr. Obama has been in office. In that same period, removals related to convictions for entering or re-entering the country illegally tripled under Mr. Obama to more than 188,000.

“For years, the Obama administration’s spin has been that they are simply deporting so-called ‘criminal aliens,’ but the numbers speak for themselves,” said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center. “In truth, this administration — more than any other — has devastated immigrant communities across the country, tearing families away from loved ones, simply because they drove without a license, or re-entered the country desperately trying to be reunited with their family members.” More Deportations Follow Minor Crimes, Records Show New York Times April 7, 2014

  1. Illegal immigration is illegal. If we only have to obey laws we like, then I’ll stop paying income tax immediately because I really don’t like that law. My ancestors came into this country legally and I expect others to do so. Congress will either do nothing on this issue or make it worse.
