Equal pay for equal work

What does this mean to you? Does it mean that everyone doing the same job should be paid the same? The words “equal pay for equal work” are thrown around loosely by the political class, but what does it mean?

Do they mean work or job? Do they literally mean that three people all with the same job title should be paid the same?

Do we discount longevity, productivity, job performance, initiative, results? That may be true in a union job, but is that what we mean and want for all our jobs?

What is your perspective?

  1. “Equal pay for equal work” is a cliche like “middle class” which has no particular definition. It’s a populist’s tool used to garner favor by playing on a subjects biased opinion of a particular topic. It means whatever the listener or reader thinks it is or wants it to mean.

  2. Creativity and leadership should be added to your list.

In Marketing, they use the term differentiation. Separate those who just do the basics and those who lead and/or influence results.
