Bernie Sanders Wants To Make Election Day A National Holiday

Of course he does. Such a non-solution is typical of the far left. Cosmetic change is not real change. Changing the voting process is not the answer, especially another holiday which will turn into another excuse to spend the day at the Mall shopping for sales. Besides, if changing voting would help it would be far better and less expensive to have voting on a Saturday and Sunday one weekend in November. That should give most people little excuse not to vote.

Why don’t people vote? Take your pick; lazy, dumb, disenfranchised with an attitude that the things they think they are entitled to magically appear from politicians in Washington … and beside they are free. Look at NYC in the last election. That bastion of liberalism and minority citizens managed 27% turnout, lower than the miserable national average.

Think

Look at who didn’t vote nationally; the young and minorities, the very people who in many cases look toward liberal politicians for solutions for the things they want. Is it indifference, ignorance; who knows, but it’s not new. We have a nation of takers who can march in the streets for a higher wage, free birth control or in protest of a perceived act of discrimination, but have no clue how government works or the time and inclination to vote.

There is no longer a price to live in our republic, you can simply take and take and have the likes of Sanders and Elizabeth Warren defend you against the bad guys. You have no accountability for your actions. You can have a mortgage you could never afford adjusted, you can have student loans you should not have taken forgiven, you don’t need an ID to vote (even though you don’t anyway), you can blame others for your low-income rather than the fact you dropped out of school or had two children and no marriage, etc., etc., etc. With the elimination of the draft, the one last equalizer of commitment to ones country was gone (not to mention the training that was gained by many in past generations). Now it’s all me and my entitlement.

We don’t educate our children in American history or civics or common sense. Instead we hear that business doesn’t create jobs, that you didn’t build that, that somehow the % killed your opportunities in life, that everything is stacked against you and that someone in Washington will pass a law to make it all better …and yet you are too indifferent to even vote for people who make those false promises. Hah?

Could it be that old Bernie is more worried about the people who typically vote for the left not turning out to vote than the population as a whole? Just askin😛

Sure, a national holiday is the answer‼️ In the words of that great philosopher Archie Bunker, we are a nation of meatheads.

WASHINGTON — Frustrated with the historic number of voters who chose not to participate in this year’s midterm elections, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Friday announced his intention to introduce legislation that would make Election Day a national holiday to give Americans more opportunity to vote.

“In America, we should be celebrating our democracy and doing everything possible to make it easier for people to participate in the political process. Election Day should be a national holiday so that everyone has the time and opportunity to vote. While this would not be a cure-all, it would indicate a national commitment to create a more vibrant democracy,” the progressive senator said in a statement.

Turnout in Tuesday’s elections clocked in at a paltry 37 percent, compared to about 41 percent in 2010, according to data from the United States Elections Project. If that projection holds, it would be the lowest voter turnout since 1942.

The voters who did show up to vote largely skewed older, whiter and more m ale compared with other election cycles, and the results were obvious. Republicans picked up control of the Senate, gained seats in the House, won key gubernatorial posts and greatly expanded their hold on state legislatures. Younger and minority voters, on the other hand, largely stayed at home. Voters in the 18-29 age range made up only 13 percent of the electorate, compared with nearly a quarter that were seniors, who tend to support Republicans.

President Barack Obama acknowledged the matter in a press conference on Wednesday, saying, “To the two-thirds of voters who chose not to participate in the process yesterday, I hear you, too.”

But the number of people who vote in midterm elections isn’t the only problem according to Sanders. The Vermont independent also called typical levels of turnout in presidential elections “an international embarrassment.” The number is higher in presidential years, but the U.S. still ranks behind 120 other countries in average turnout.

“We should not be satisfied with a ‘democracy’ in which more than 60 percent of our people don’t vote and some 80 percent of young people and low-income Americans fail to vote,” he added. “We can and must do better than that. While we must also focus on campaign finance reform and public funding of elections, establishing an Election Day holiday would be an important step forward.”

Sanders said he would file the bill, titled ”Democracy Day Act of 2014,” once Congress reconvenes next week.

  1. Maybe we could put a TAX on everyone over 18 years old who do not vote in every general election! Oh wait, that would penalize the less fortunate, NEVER MIND! I know TAX the RICH, OLD, VOTERS, then pay (I MEAN SUBSIDIZE) the rest to show-up & vote! JUST KIDDING!

  2. Bernie just doesn’t get it. He doesn’t see that the progressive (ultra radical liberal) policies he pushes haven’t done anything for the young and minorities so they don’t have anything to vote for. Meanwhile, the older folks have seen that a) those policies don’t do anything for minorities and the young and b) those policies continue to ruin our great country. So older voters know without a doubt that there is definitely something to vote for.
