Happy 4th of July

20130629-092759.jpgOn July 8, 1776, Col. John Nixon read out load the Declaration of Independence for the first time at the State House in Philadelphia.  Copies were dispatched by rider to the Thirteen Colonies to be printed and read to the people.

So began a long journey and struggle that has gotten us to where we are today.  What was important then was survival.  Rich and poor men risked everything to fight for what they believed in.  Leaving their families with no security average men fought for Independence.  The sacrifices and the good luck that resulted in the independence of the Colonies is hard to comprehend in the 21st century.  I dare say, all too many Americans are virtually ignorant of what took place.  There were nearly incomprehensible critical issues to be dealt with before, during and especially after the revolution; somehow we made it through and in the succeeding decades we made it through wars, economic disasters and more.

Today, well, take a look at how many flags you see flying on this special day or any National Holiday for that matter. Look at the issues we fight about. Consider the quality and integrity of Congress and most of all think about how we have become so dependent on the very government we initially feared and wanted minimized.

I am not optimistic about the next 200 years, I hope I am wrong.

However!  This is our Nation’s birthday, enjoy and remember what it truly means and what is at stake if we forget.

  1. My AMERICAN FLAG made right here in NJ flies all day every day. The stars and stripes are also proudly tattooed (I know, you have pet peeve) on my left arm. I, also am not optimistic about the future of this great country. It’s going to collapse on itself with the weight of government.and free stuff.
