New rules on energy generation

So the Administration wants greater cuts on carbon emissions from electric generation. Okay, don’t we all.

Nobody should argue against improving our environment. However, keep a few things in mind:

  1. Jobs will be lost in the coal industry
  2. More land will be consumed by solar power
  3. There will be more visual pollution from wind turbines
  4. The cost of electricity (and your bill) will rise
  5. Both solar and wind power are not as reliable as traditionally sources so back up sources will always be required which includes nuclear power which some people are against
  6. More transmission lines will be required (NIMBY)

None of the above means we shouldn’t be heading in a more environmentally friendly direction, but let’s not forget, nothing is without cost and consequences.

  1. It always amazes me how people forget history. The national energy policy should be fuel diversification. Any body remember the energy crisis of the 1970’s? Natural gas shortages during a cold winter in the early 90’s? Japan and Germany over dependence on nuclear? Natural gas being cut off to the Ukraine by Russia in the last few years. How many wars have been fought over oil? Soon natural gas is going to be the base load with undependable wind and solar driving the spot market prices. How did America mess this up?

  2. Some additional thoughts to ponder.

Several hundred coal fired plants have already shut down. Truck, barge and train traffic transporting coal in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky have been significantly reduced. Another major coal mining company has filed for bankruptcy.

Gas fired combined cycle units are popping up all over but the require less manpower. Wind turbines are known to interrupt migratory bird flyaway.

Our electric bill has climbed by 10 to 20 percent and now the power company is upgrading utility poles and high tension towers which are also impacting our costs.

In rural communities, the costs are spread among fewer people which has a greater financial impact on residents.
