Mutually, We, Common, United, Give me your tired, your poor

America is being torn apart. There are forces that see progress in keeping us from being united. Look at Twitter, Facebook and other social media and you see attacks on police, the wealthy, business in general, CEOs and more.

Instead of united, we have groups of all kinds with their own champions and creating their own scapegoats. Affinity groups have their own parades, holidays, awards. Political correctness takes precedence over common sense.

Diversity can be a powerful tool for good. A diverse set of opinions and experience can help solve problems, but not when diversity is focused inward with self-interest a priority over a common united goal.

We are not united in any meaning of the word. Much of this is promoted by politicians who see a strategy based on keeping us divided by race, gender, income, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, even age.

Immigrants came to America to be Americans, to leave the old country behind while keeping their traditions in the family, but putting their new country and its language first. That objective seems to have declined.

We have problems to solve, wrongs to right, fairness to promote, but that will only be accomplished in a united country. History shows us that the more diverse and inner focused a society is the more inability to function it faces. We don’t all have to be alike or believe the same things or look the same, but we will only decline if we continue to pull in different directions.

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
