Out of touch

Someone recently told me that at age 80 I am out of touch with younger generations. Not sure I would say out of touch, but I sure don’t understand much of their lives.

Yesterday playing golf I was paired with a young man around 35 +- . He was a nice guy, quite talkative – never stopped actually. My first realization was a different appearance.

He looked like the guy playing a caveman in the TV commercial. Very long, black thick hair and a massive beard to go with it. Not my cup of tea. He frequently complained he couldn’t see the ball because of the hair in his eyes.

He had beer in his Yeti and generously offered to share an extra can. He alluded to playing better golf when he was a little “buzzed.” I thought Yetis were for water or coffee, but what do I know?

Boy could he hit the golf ball, 250-300 yards to my 165, except nearly always into the woods- plenty of power, no control.

He asked what I did. Long retired I said.

He explained he was “between jobs” which meant he had lost his job and received a severance payment which didn’t bother him a bit. He decided to practice at being retired so played golf a couple of times a week. Me, losing my job would have freaked me out.

It gets better, my lack of understanding was soon enhanced.

That’s an understatement

He said he was married with three children ages 2 to 7 and his wife worked.

No job, no concern, who was taking care of the children – day care no doubt or a relative? Better to play golf than spending time with your children or looking for a job?

And he smoked‼️

Oh yes, indeed I am out of touch- thank God😎

  1. I have a Medicare card in my wallet and Gen Z kids still in school. Thankfully, I have live-in translators for every contingency!

They’re different and I love it. I hope they can change the world for the better.

  2. Mr Quinn:

I don’t agree with your stereotyping. I’m 76 and I work in education with younger people, some foreign and some American. They are highly motivated to succeed in professional careers. There are plenty of these younger people too.

    1. The point was illustrating a different view of a different generation. I have no doubt there are many motivated younger people as well as many who complain without a perspective of the past .

  3. So, you had a learning experience–maybe with all the social programs we have it makes it easier to be unemployed temporarily–things certainly are different.
